June Meeting Recap and July Block Challenge

What a fun meeting we had yesterday!  It was great to have such a big turnout, and so nice to have so many new faces - thanks to all who invited friends and family to join us.

Sharon won the block lottery:

and Gayle explained the July Challenge - one I am very excited about!

The challenge is to make a star block - any pattern, any size.  The only requirement is that you use red, white and blue fabric.  The example she brought was the Patriotic Star, and the directions for it are here.

I was looking around the interwebs and found this Pinterest page - with links to lots of wonky star quilts.  Looks like many of these use the "sew and flip" technique that Gayle and Joanne shared this week.  Can't wait to see what everyone brings to share next month.  Remember - you can contribute up to three blocks for three chances to win all the blocks!

Thanks to Gayle and Joanne for presenting this month.

They made up several sample blocks and showed different configurations for using them, and then everyone had a chance to play and come up with new ways of arranging the blocks:

There was lots of show and tell this month.  First was our Madrona Road Challenge quilt which we are donating to the OKC MQG to be delivered to someone in their community recovering from the recent weather events.  Thanks to Pam who quilted and bound the quilt and made the really cool back!

Pam also shared her "Austin Six" quilt - made as a souvenir of the trip to Quiltcon, using the official Quiltcon colors, matchstick and ghost quilting and six flowers representing the six of us who attended.

Tricia shared a quilt top she made using a paper pieced kite block:

Gayle shared a dress she and her granddaughter made:

and a super-cute combo iron caddy and ironing pad:

BJ shared that she is challenging herself to stretch her creativity while making all 100 of Tula Pink's 100 Modern Quilt blocks from her book of the same name.  She says that she is already putting colors and patterns together that she never would have in the past!  We look forward to seeing more of these blocks.

Sharon made this table runner as a gift for her daughter in law.  Love the negative space quilting.

Catherine made some baby gifts:

Jean, who did last month's Slice and Dice technique presentation, continued to male more blocks and is now quilting it.

Joan brought a couple of new quilts:

And finally, I brought a pillow I made using English paper pieced hexies - and fun and addictive technique.

Thanks to Jean for all the pictures!

We missed Ava and Sandi, the head cheerleaders this week, and I hope that second string pep club member did a ok job running the meeting.  Thanks for the opportunity and hope to see everyone next month!
