Whole lot of stitchin' goin' on

We're about a week away from our February meeting on the 9th, 10:00 a.m. at Sew-Bee-It and we sure have a lot going on. . .

Saturday Sew-In

Sandi has arranged for us to have a sew-in at Sew-Bee-It after our meeting on Saturday from 1:00-4:00. There is a class in the morning that will last until around 12:30. This will give us time to do some shopping, grab a bite to eat, and then meet back up and get some sewing done. We are planning to work on the Madrona Road Challenge Quilt(s) and the Guild banners. Feel free to bring your own projects to work on too, or just come and hang out with some great Modern Quilt Guild buddies.

Madrona Road Challenge

Our Madrona Road Challenge blocks are DUE. Janet presented this challenge at our January meeting and distributed beautiful fabric packs. She has asked that we bring our leftover scraps to this meeting for finishing out the quilt(s) we're going to make. If you need a refresher on the challenge rules, check out the "Madrona Road Challenge" post from January 2, 2013.

Logo Blocks

I have had so much fun playing with our logo blocks. What a beautiful bunch. A wonderful display of individuality and creativity, and such a great group effort! Before our blocks become guild banners, we thought they should make an internet debut.

From the top left, and working right:

Row 1: Janet, Sharon, Cindy

Row 2: Gerry, Gerry, Joan

Row 3: Jean, Denise, Gayle

Row 4: Debra, Sandi, Sandi

Row 5: Kate, Brenda, Ava

Row 6: Joanne

I think these are going to make gorgeous banners! Don't you agree?

I hope everyone can make it to the meeting and stay afterwards for some sewing. Don't forget your Madrona Road Challenge blocks and your leftover scraps.

Until then, keep stitching!

Pam

Madrona Road Challenge Clarification

In my original blog post and in the info I passed out at the meeting, I said your "finished block" should be 12.5 inches.  Just to be clear - you need to make a 12.5 inch block for the challenge.  (Of course, in the quilt, it will end up being a 12" block.)  Hope I didn't confuse too many of you!

I have (hopefully) updated the blog to post to say this!

The January Meeting

Hello Modern Quilt Gals,

What a fun Saturday morning!  We had the knitting corner of Sew Bee It packed!

We welcomed some new folks, said hello to old friends and welcomed old friends new to the group.  As Brenda would say, it is a wonderful quilting family!

A sample of the Logo Blocks

We had an incredible response to Pam's Logo Challenge--18 logo blocks were submitted and no two were the same.  Pam will be sharing the logo blocks on the blog in the weeks to come.

The guild received a package of Michael Miller's Madrona Road fabrics and Janet come up with a block challenge for February--using the Log Cabin Makeover chapter from "Quilting Modern", come up with your own log cabin block.  For more details, see her blog already posted on the webpage.  Blocks will be due at the February meeting. Janet--thanks for a great challenge and getting the fabric packets ready!

Sandi introduced our inspiration book for 2013--"Quilting Modern" by Jacquie Gering and Katie Pedersen.  She reviewed the first four chapters and pointed out highlights for the group.  Then Sharon shared her new favorite marking pen that disappears when heat is applied.  If I had been taking better notes, I would have all the details...I will have to share them later.  And I showed a quick demonstration of how creative you can get using your straight stitch/walking foot to make a number of curved quilting patterns.

Then for the best part--Show & Tell--

Janet's Fibonacci Quilt--with special piecing for the extra large block.

Sandi's Janus Quilt

Debra's "Boxed" Quilt

Katherine's Quilt  made for a special friend

Denise's Quilt

And our own quilting rock star--Jean's quilt--

See you all in February!!

Madrona Road Challenge

How would you like to have some lovely FREE fabric to play with?

Michael Miller Fabrics teamed with the Modern Quilt Guild to offer local guilds complimentary fabric to use in a challenge of their choice.  We thought this would be a good opportunity to try out some of the inspirations and techniques in the book we are using this year, Quilting Modern.

So – here’s the plan - each participant will receive at least 3 fat eighths of Madrona Road prints and a fat quarter of Kona Snow.  The fabric will be available at the January 12 meeting.  If you cannot attend the meeting but want to participate, call Janet Suber at 423-364-0684 or via email (liveswithcorgi@gmail.com) to arrange to get your fabric.

Your challenge is to create one (or more!) pieced blocks inspired by one of the “Log Cabin Makeover” techniques described in Quilting Modern, pages 65 – 93.

Here are the rules:

1.   Use only the Madrona Road fabrics and Kona Snow.  You will get at least three fat eighths of the prints, and participants can share the various prints with each other.
      2.  Make your blocks are 12.5 inch square.
3.  Press all seams open.

Additional Option:  Make a “pod block” as described in steps 10 – 12 on page 77 (Lilac Crush Quilt).

Bring your finished square(s) to the February 9 meeting.  For each block contributed, a participant will get one chance at winning enough squares for a quilt top.  We will draw for the winner at the meeting.

We will decide as a group what to do with the remaining squares.  Hopefully, we will have enough for another quilt top, and we might want to provide a finished quilt to a charitable organization.  Come with suggestions!

It's a New Year!!

Hello Modern Quilting Gals,

It is officially the start of 2013 and I am looking forward to a great year ahead!  But first a quick thank you to Jean for posting pics from the December 8th Open House at Sew-Bee-It.  It was great to see what happened while I was away.  I have loved seeing all the quilts up at the shop during December.

Our January meeting is just around the corner.  I am actually ahead for a change and have my Chatt MQG Block Challenge block done!!!  This is unheard of for me--although it would have gone more smoothly had I done a better job of reading the instructions.  My first go at the block was 12 1/2 by 12 1/2 when the block is supposed to be 10 1/2 by 10 1/2...fortunately I was able to scale it down.  I can't wait to see all the blocks out of the wonderful colors!

And Janet will have a new challenge for us from the Madrona Road line from Michael Miller.  The fabric was supplied by the Modern Quilt Guild and Janet will have details for us at the meeting!

Sandi will be doing a brief presentation from the first four chapters of the Quilting Modern book and I will share some of my "straight line" walking foot techniques to do some curved quilting patterns.  And Sandi will have the sign up sheet for the 2013 programs, so be thinking about what chapter you might want to share!

And of course, bring along those projects you have been working on for Show and Tell!

See you on January 12th at 10am!
